§ 02 / ABOUT

How it works.

Pick a value, pick the unit you have, pick the unit you want. The math is a single multiplication: every speed unit is stored as a multiplier from m/s, and converting from A to B is (value × A.factor) ÷ B.factor.

// THE KEY CONVERSIONS

  • 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h = 0.44704 m/s
  • 1 km/h = 0.621371 mph = 0.27778 m/s
  • 1 knot = 1.852 km/h = 1.151 mph (one nautical mile / hour)
  • 1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s = 0.681818 mph
  • Mach 1 ≈ 343 m/s ≈ 767 mph (sea level, 20°C)

// USE IT FOR

  • Converting US speed limits to km/h for a road trip across the border
  • Reading aviation reports in knots when you think in mph
  • Sanity-checking running pace in m/s vs the more familiar mph
  • Translating tech specs (drone top speed, car 0-60) between systems
§ 03 / FAQ

Common questions.

How do I convert mph to km/h?+
Multiply by 1.609344. Example: 60 mph × 1.609344 ≈ 96.56 km/h. The reverse: km/h × 0.621371 ≈ mph.
What’s a knot?+
One nautical mile per hour. A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters (one minute of arc along a meridian), so 1 knot ≈ 1.852 km/h ≈ 1.151 mph. Used for sea and air navigation because nautical miles map cleanly onto charts.
Why is mach approximate?+
Mach 1 is the speed of sound, but the speed of sound varies with air temperature and pressure. We use 343 m/s — sea level, 20°C dry air. At altitude (cold thin air) mach 1 drops below 300 m/s. For mission-critical aviation math, look up local speed of sound; for everyday "how fast is mach 2" questions, this is fine.
Why do US street signs use mph but science uses m/s?+
Historical inertia. The US never switched to metric for road signs. Most science and engineering uses m/s because it composes cleanly with other SI units (kg, second, joule). km/h is the everyday metric speed unit; m/s is the scientific one.
